FESTIVAL OF SPOLETO

JUNE / JULY

The Festival of Two Worlds of Spoleto, founded to create a dialogue and exchange between European and American music, theatre and art, served as the model for the ambitions of all of the manifestations that followed. However, no festival other than Spoleto has managed to have such a profound impact on the cultural identity of our times.
The international breadth, the courage to dare, the extraordinary spaces where the festival of Spoleto presents concerts and shows (the seventeenth-century Caio Melisso theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, the square where the Duomo of Santa Maria dell’Assunta rises up featuring works by Filippo Lippi and Pinturicchio, a theatre hosting gala concerts and closing events) have allowed a small Umbrian city to mark the path of Italian culture..

Brought to life in the 1950’s through the vision of maestro Giancarlo Menotti, the Festival of Two Worlds has transformed Spoleto into a place of experimentation and exchange of experiences that traces the course of European and American artistic research. The two worlds have spoken in the Umbrian city and given life to admirable works.

Although music and prose have been the focus of the festival throughout the years, Spoleto has never forgotten cinema, photography or the figurative arts that in the Festival of Two Worlds have discovered an ideal forum for making their public debut.

Characterized by incessant research, capable of presenting breakthrough shows and works, this is where the avant-garde meets with tradition. Those who have directed or appeared on stage in Spoleto include Luchino Visconti, Vittorio Gassman, Carla Fracci, Luciano Pavarotti, Roman Polanski and Luca Ronconi.
The manifestation is accompanied by debates and conventions of scientific divulgation.
